16 Sep 2006: Sale United 3-9 Lisbon St Antonys (HT 2-6)

Today was our first away game of the season, and it didn’t get off to a good start with both Robyn and Ria turning up late, and then to make matters worse the coaches got lost on the way to the Sale United home ground.

This was Claire’s fault, ha ha. (Need to blame someone),

Once we arrived at the ground, we didn’t have enough time to prepare properly and the game started slowly. It took ten minutes for Jess to score the first goal (0-1), quickly followed by Jessica’s second goal on fourteen minutes (0-2), Sale United worked hard and scored next with seventeen minutes played (1-2) thanks to Joely who made a huge mistake in net and gifted them the goal (unlucky Joely). Straight from the kick off there was some great passing which allowed Ria to score on eighteen minutes (1-3), giving Lisbon that two goal cushion. Another quick passing move allowed Hanifa to score with twenty minutes played (1-4).

Sale United never gave up and managed to score a second goal after a lot of hard work (2-4). Jess then completed her hat trick on 30 minutes (2-5) followed by the final goal of the half by Fred (2-6) – a great shot which was lobbed over the goalie from 20 yards.

Half time: Sale 2 Lisbon 6. Whitby, Jess and Beth were all substituted at half time to make way for Frankie, Lucy and April. Some great passing and brilliant play by Frankie allowed her to run into the box only to be brought down by a Sale United defender (penalty). After some moaning, Robyn stepped up and calmly scored her first goal of the season (2-7). Sale United continued to work hard and pulled back another goal (3-7). The goal scoring was completed with goals from both Joely (3-8) and Fred (3-9).

The game then settled down with Lisbon enjoying a lot of possession but Frankie, Lucy and April were all guilty of missing easy chances (better luck next time, girls). Sale United continued to work hard and won a penalty thanks to dodgy defending by Robyn and Jess. The Sale striker took the penalty only for Fred to make the save (well done).

There was some great football played in this match at times and I was impressed with all the girls.
