21 Apr 2007: (friendly) Poynton U15 3-5 Lisbon St Antonys (HT 0-4)

Today we played Poynton’s under 15s team in an end of season friendly, only Hanaan wasn’t available for today’s game, this meant we only had two quality substitutes in Joely and Frankie. When we first arrived at Poynton’s ground I was amazed at how tall their team was, with certain players at least 5 foot 10 inches in height.

Lisbon started the game extremely well with some excellent passing and movement all over the pitch, it only took four minutes for Jess to score the first goal with a great through ball from Hanifa 0-1. The second goal came on 13 minutes when Lucy’s fantastic corner landed on Whitby’s head to double the lead 0-2., (great goal considering how tall their team are). Seven minutes later Fred increased the lead again this time from a perfect 30 yard free kick 0-3, the final goal of the half was scored by Whitby, this time Jess got the assist 0-4.

Joely and Frankie swapped places with Lucy and Bethany at half time and Ria went up front with Finney having her first chance in net. The first goal of the half and Lisbon’s final goal of the game came on 57 minutes when a rare through ball from Aphra set up Fred who expertly finished giving Poynton’s keeper no chance 0-5. Poynton then scored a great free kick two minutes later 1-5, and this lifted their team spirit, over the next ten minutes Poynton played really well committing more players up front. This paid off and Poynton scored two more goals before the final whistle 3-5.

Poyntons third and final goal was a huge mistake by Laura (sorry Laura), instead of taking the easy option and passing to Frankie (unmarked), Laura decided to take on all of Poynton’s stickers and lost the ball, this gave Finney no chance to save the shot.

Today’s game was yet again another example of poor positional play (this time it was in the second half). Up to now we have always managed to win these games, but your luck won’t last forever, and we have to be professional for the full 70 minutes.

Congratulations on your 18th win of the season (against much bigger and older opposition this time)

Whitby girl of match (glad you’re back)
Aphra (great game) best defender on the pitch.

Well done – Dave, Pat & Claire
