28 Oct 2006: Sale United 1-11 Lisbon St Antonys (HT 0-4)

Today was our first league cup game of the season – against Sale United, after our 100% start to the season it was important that we got off to a good start in the cup.

Hanaan was away on holiday and we started with Bethany and April as substitutes. Sale Utd played with six at the back plus their keeper and Lisbon found it hard to find that first all important goal. Fred, Hanifa and Whitby were brilliant first half, and shot after shot was stopped by the Sale United keeper until, after fifteen minutes, Whitby played Jess in and Lisbon got their first goal, 0-1. Straight from the kick-off, Hanifa won the ball back and after a quick one-two with Fred, Hanifa scored with her right foot, 0-2. Lisbon dominated possession, passing the ball around with ease; Frankie got the ball on the left and on 22 minutes set up Fred who scored, 0-3.

Sale tried to clear the ball but kept running into the Lisbon defence – Aphra and Joely were great all game and kept winning the ball back. Another quick passing move from Fred to Whitby, who beat the defender and passed the ball into the box, and Hanifa headed the ball home on thirty minutes 0-4. The first half finished at 0-4 to Lisbon, but we had hit the crossbar three times and if it wasn’t for the Sale United keeper, who was outstanding, we could have scored ten goals.

The second half started with Robyn and Frankie making way for April and Bethany. Sale United then decided to change their keeper and attack more. The game opened up, allowing more time for our attackers on the ball, Ria made an immediate impact scoring on forty minutes from a through ball from April, 0-5. Ria then forced her way through the Sale United defence and was one-on-one with the keeper but being totally unselfish, she passed the ball to April who scored into an empty net, 0-6. Lisbon continued to play well and with fifty minutes played, Hanifa beat two players and set up April’s second goal, 0-7. This was followed by Lucy’s only goal, a first time shot on fifty five minutes which was also set up by Hanifa, 0-8.

Sale United continued to push forward and even though our defence had won the ball, a sloppy back pass from Laura (sorry Laura) allowed in their only goal on sixty minutes, 1-8 (well done Sale). Straight from the spot kick, the ball was passed to Jess who shot at goal straightaway but the ball bounced back off the crossbar and landed at Joely’s feet. Joely then flicked the ball over the keeper to score the best goal of the game, 1-9 (well done). Another quick goal from Fred on sixty five minutes with her left foot meant that both Fred and Hanifa were now aiming for perfect hat-tricks, 1-10. The final goal of the game completed another perfect hat trick on sixty eight minutes 1-11 – this was set up by … Fred, and Hanifa wins the last big trophy for perfect hat tricks (well done).

Today Lisbon played extremely well throughout the game and I was extremely impressed at how well the whole team played. Fred, Hanifa, Whitby, Joely, Ria and Aphra had great performances in the game, and just like the St Johns game, we had seven different players on the score sheet (with seven different assists).

Well done

Dave, Pat and Claire.

Goals: 1st half – Jess, Hanifa, Fred, Hanifa;
2nd half – Ria, April x2, Lucy, Joely, Fred, Hanifa
