Today we played Stalybridge in our third league cup game of the season, and it turned out to be a very competitive match. The day didn’t start well with Aphra, Frankie and Hanaan missing the start of the game and Lisbon having to start with 10 players. The pitch and wind didn’t help either team and at times it was more like tennis than football.
After five minutes, Stalybridge got a corner and some unlucky goal-keeping meant Ria pushed the ball into her own net – once again the wind didn’t help, 1-0. Lisbon equalised on 13 minutes after Whitby took a throw and Hanifa let the ball go across her body and then volleyed the ball with her left foot, 1-1. Stalybridge scored their second goal on 18 minutes – this was from another mistake from Lisbon, this time April shouted for a throw in and let the Stalybridge striker steal the ball from her to score, 2-1. Lisbon equalised again on 21 minutes, Jess passed the ball to Hanifa who then took the ball to the edge of the area and smashed it in, 2-2. This was a great shot, and the keeper had no chance (well done Hanifa). Unfortunately the final goal of the half came from Stalybridge, making the half time score 3-2. Lisbon were extremely unlucky not to be in front at half time but credit goes to the Stalybridge keeper who made 3 fantastic saves.
Lisbon started the second half with the wind behind them and for 20 minutes Stalybridge struggled to even clear the ball. After missing six good chances to score, Lisbon finally equalised again on 54 minutes, this time Frankie played the ball to Lucy who calmly scored to make the score 3-3. Stalybridge again took the lean after 60 minutes from another set piece, this time it was a free kick, the ball looped over 5 Lisbon players and landed at the striker’s feet, 4-3. From then on, Lisbon missed chance after chance to score, but with only 3 minutes left on the clock, Hanaan won the ball in defence and passed to Whitby who then played a brilliant ball through to Jess. Jess beat the defenders and scored, 4-4 (best goal of the game and very important).
Today’s game was great to watch and I think Lisbon deserved to win, but if we can’t defend set pieces, the game could have easily been lost.
Well done girls.
Dave, Pat and Claire.
