Today was our second home game of the season, and it was a great day for Lisbon St Antonys Girls – before the game we were top of the league but both Stockport and Stalybridge had a better goal difference. You might not think that this is really important (and you would be right) but as a coach it is still nice to have the better goal difference and now the team know in black and white just how good our attacking skills are (average – 9 goals per game).
We arrived at Partington about 12 o’clock and the weather was great (dry and sunny). After our warm up, we had a great team talk and decided it was time for a new keeper (sorry Frankie).
It was a great start for Lisbon St Ants with Jess scoring five goals with only 12 minutes played, three set up by great passing from Whitby, and the other two assists from Lucy and Hanifa. In between Jess’s five goals, Lucy scored her first goal of the season on ten minutes (well done). By now the score was already 6-0 to Lisbon and we had only played 12 minutes. Time for a change, I shouted Jess over and told her that she could only score with her left foot and headers – this worked out well because Jess didn’t score again in the first half (never stopped her before – Ed.). The team continued to dominate with Lucy and Whitby having great games playing as wingers, the passing and movement was great at times and Whitby scored on 20 minutes, followed by Hanifa intercepting a goal kick and making it 0-8. Fred then went on to make it 0-9 with some great one-two passing with Whitby. St Johns continued to battle and after a mistake from Aphra (not putting the ball out), St Johns scored their only goal on 27 minutes (well done). St Johns 1-9 Lisbon.
The first half ended with Ria scoring two quick goals set up by Fred and Hanifa on 29 and 30 minutes 1-11, and the final goal of the first half was scored by Whitby, set up by Lucy.
Half time: St Johns 1-12 Lisbon. At half time Jess went in net, Frankie moved to right wing, Joely swapped places with Beth at right back and Hanaan played at left back. Laura moved into the holding role and Fred moved to the left wing.
The team continued to play well and again dominated the majority of possession and it wasn’t long before we scored again. Fred scored first on 50 minutes with an assist from Hanaan (1-13), Whitby then completed her perfect hat trick – Hanifa crossed the ball in and Whitby headed it into the back of the net (congratulations) 1-14. Lucy scored her second goal on 55 minutes (don’t know who got the assist), followed by Frankie getting her first and second goals for Lisbon on 57 and 65 minutes (both assists from Fred). After one more change, swapping Ria for Lucy upfront, Hanifa finished the game with the final goal on 66 minutes (thank you) after a great pass from Joely. Final score St Johns 1-18 Lisbon.
Lisbon played very well against a very gallant and determined St Johns, but our passing and movement was excellent, and at times our strikers and wingers were too much for St Johns to contain. We had seven different scorers today with six different players providing assists. Congratulations must go to Lucy and Frankie for their first goals of the season, and to Whitby and Jess who were excellent.
As a coach it is always nice to see your team win, but if I’m being honest, I didn’t enjoy today’s game very much (sorry girls). Enjoy the break, and we’ll see you all (on time) on Thursday 26th at Parklands.
P.S. We are 3 points clear of Stockport and six points clear of Stalybridge (that makes me happy).
Well done
Dave, Pat and Claire.
